The Food and Lodging section recognizes that education is the least expensive, yet most effective means to reduce the occurrence of food-borne illness. We are committed to the protection of the health and well-being of the citizens of Craven County.
Increases in outbreaks of food-borne illness across the country have focused the public's attention on the causes and prevention of outbreaks in food service establishments, as well as at home. Changes in agricultural practices, ecological changes, international travel and commerce, changes in lifestyle, emerging pathogens and the high turnover rate in the food service industry, indicate the need for an ongoing food safety education program.
The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety system is utilized to enable food service owners, managers, and food service employees to:
ServSafe classes are offered at the Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern. Participants must purchase the 7th Edition ServSafe book along with a test answer sheet. Also, proctored ServSafe exams are offered at the Craven County Health Department for those not wishing to take the class. Exams and classes are offered for a fee of $75 per person with a 2 person minimum. Please check the calendar for dates, or call (252) 636-4936 for more information.
Community Colleges may also offer ServSafe classes.
