Municipal Elections

The Municipal Elections schedule is as follows:  
Only voters who live within a municipality may vote for municipal candidates.
Even year elections:

  • Town of Bridgeton with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of Mayor and 4 Commissioners  on two year terms with an election cycle every two years in even years
  • Town of Cove City with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of Mayor and 5 Aldermen on four year terms with an election cycle every four years in even years 
  • Town of Dover with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of Mayor and 5 Aldermen on two year terms with an election cycle every two years in even years 
  • City of Havelock with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of  Mayor and 5 Commissioners on four year staggered terms with an election cycle every two years in even years 
  • Town of River Bend with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of  Mayor  and 5 Council seats  on four year staggered terms with an election cycle every two years in even years 
  • Town of Trent Woods with  a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of Mayor and 3 Commissioners on two year terms with an election cycle every two years in even years 
  • Town of Vanceboro with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of Mayor and 5 Aldermen on four year terms with an election cycle every four years in even years and does not allow absentee voting.
  • First Craven Sanitary District with a Type 1 election method which is a nonpartisan plurality election of 5 District member seats on four year staggered terms with an election cycle every two years in even years 
  • Soil and Water Conservation District - nonpartisan plurality election - 3 Supervisors seats - four year staggered terms with an election cycle every two years in even years

Odd year elections:

  • City of New Bern with Type 4 election method which is a nonpartisan election runoff election of Mayor and 6 Ward Aldermen on four year terms with an election cycle every four years in odd years

Next Election Date:   Tuesday, March 5, 2024 Primary 

All municipalities run a non-partisan plurality election method, except for the City of New Bern which runs a non-partisan runoff election method with the election held in October. If there are any runoffs, they are held in November of the same year. Runoffs are when no candidate for a single office receives a majority of the total votes cast for that office.
